Beijing to do more to fight smog
AUTHORITIES in Beijing said they plan to do more than just wait for the wind to blow away smog.
Li Shixiang, vice mayor of Beijing, told a press conference the government will double the number air quality monitoring stations to 72 and introduce “mobile monitoring vehicles.”
He didn’t give a time frame, but said the government also plans to reduce the consumption of coal, limit the use of cars, cut industrial pollution and control dust from construction sites.
The mean density of PM 2.5 particles in the first 11 months was 74 micrograms per cubic meter, down 16 percent from last year, he said.
Officials from Hebei and Tianjin, which neighbor Beijing, were also at the press conference.
“We should improve the system for early warning and forecasting,” said Yin Hailin, vice mayor of Tianjin.
Yang Chongyong, executive vice governor of Hebei, said emergency measures could lower the pollution level by 20 to 30 percent.
“We should have more information exchanges,” he said.
On Monday, Beijing issued its first red alert for air pollution since the four-tier emergency response system was created in October 2013.
