Beijing to limit auto traffic by plate numbers

BEIJING will enforce traffic control starting October 10 with a new rule that allows car owners to drive on days determined by their license plate numbers, Beijing News reported today.

Car owners whose plate numbers end with "4" or "9" are not allowed to drive on Monday; those ending with "5" or "0" are banned from road on Tuesday; "1" and "6", "2" and "7," "3" and "8" are not allowed on road respectively on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No restriction for the weekend.

The new rule designed to reduce the capital's chronic traffic woes is effective until January 8 next year.
