Beijing to punish those who defy car control

Though Beijing ordered 30 percent of official vehicles off the road to help cut car emissions, the main cause of smog that has choked the city for 25 days, 875 government sedans continued to hit the road the day after the order was made on Monday.

The city authorities plan to withdraw the order tonight because a cold front is coming and will blow away the smog, the Beijing Evening News reported.

Official vehicles from 16 district governments disobeyed the order on Tuesday, including 206 vehicles belonging to the city's downtown Chaoyang District.

Traffic control authorities will publish the names of those government offices and give them punishment, the report showed.

Beijing will adopt a stricter vehicle emission standard, equivalent to Euro V, this Friday to reduce the density of PM2.5 particles in the air.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection said yesterday the hazardous smog has shrouded a large part of China, including the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan.
