Beijing to spend 10 billion yuan to renovate old buildings
Beijing government will start to renovate buildings constructed before 1980 with an investment of 10 billion yuan (US$1.55 billion) from next month, aiming to make the buildings more earthquake-resistant and energy-efficient, The Beijing News reported today.
Structures with an estimated area of 4,000 square meters in the capital will be revamped, including residential buildings, schools, hospitals and department stores, according to the report, citing an official with the Beijing Housing Construction Commission.
After the renovation, the operational span of the buildings can be extended by at least 10 years, the official told the newspaper.
The whole project is expected to be completed by 2015, the report said.
