Beijing to update app for traffic accidents
Beijing is to promote a mobile phone app next month aimed at handling minor traffic accidents in a bid to reduce traffic jams.
The Beijing Insurance Regulatory Commission said 172 traffic accidents had been resolved via a version of the app that had been on trial in the city’s Haidian and Changping districts since May 13.
In the event of a minor traffic accident, users can post pictures via the app and traffic police will determine responsibility and damages online. Drivers can then reach an agreement and quickly move their vehicles without police having to attend.
The app is for accidents in which vehicles are slightly damaged and where passengers sustain only minor injuries.
More than 90 percent of traffic accidents that occur in the capital are considered by police to be minor.
The commission said an upgraded version of the app will be launched citywide next month.
Beijing has tried various means to address traffic congestion, which has been referred to as the city’s most serious “urban disease.”
In addition to the app, it has moved 121 markets out of downtown.
