Beijing trains squads to protect local schools
BEIJING has set up its first campus patrol squad to replace janitors at local kindergartens and schools.
The team of more than 200 local residents, picked from over 600 candidates, was established on Saturday, the Beijing News reported.
They will go to 60 schools and kindergartens in Beijing's Xicheng District on September 1 in uniform and equipped with police batons, pepper spray and specially-designed steel forks to be used against campus attackers.
By the end of next year, all schools and kindergartens in Xicheng will be under the protection of squad members, the newspaper said.
The squad, paid for by the local government, consists mainly of college graduates plus several ex-military personnel. With the arrival of a second and third batch of members, the traditional security staff in Xicheng schools and kindergartens will eventually be replaced, said Wang Hui, of the Xicheng police.
The new squad members have been trained to cope with emergencies or campus violence and each had undergone psychological tests.
Three children died in the latest kindergarten attack - at Zibo City kindergarten in Shandong Province.
Fang Jiantang, 26, was detained early this month after the first such incident since Premier Wen Jiabao pledged in May to end school attacks.
Xu Yuyuan, 47, was executed a month after he attacked 29 children and three teachers in Jiangsu Province in April.
Wu Huanming, 48, killed seven pupils and two teachers in Shaanxi Province on May 12, then killed himself.
Zheng Minsheng, 42, was executed on April 28 for slaying eight children outside a school in Fujian Province on March 23. On the same day as the execution, 18 students and a teacher were attacked at a school in Guangdong Province.
And on May 11 an attacker in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region killed a child and two women before being killed by a mob.
