Beijing websites fined for linking actress to sex club

THREE Chinese website portals have been ordered by a Beijing court to pay a combined 39,000 yuan (US$6,022) in compensation to an actress for mistaking her as a top escort in a Beijing prostitution club.

The Haidian District People's Court ruled that Sohu.com, Mop.com and Kuwo.cn should pay 11,000, 15,000 and 13,000 yuan respectively for defaming the plaintiff Zhan Yi, the Beijing Times reported today.

The three popular websites used Zhan's photos in a May 16 story on escorts hired by a Beijing club called Tian Shang Ren Jian, saying the plaintiff was a 19-year-old girl nicknamed Yao Yao and she was among the most expensive hawkers in the club.

That story was actually copied from a blog on an Internet, but the three websites failed to cite its source and put it in the news column, misleading many viewers, said the court which also ordered Mop.com and Kuwo.cn to make a public apology on their sites.
