Beijing woman to challenge world swim record

A BEIJING woman today will challenge a Guinness World record by swimming 50 kilometers.

Zhang Jie, 23, a coach with Beijing Sports Univesity, will start the challenge at 3pm in the Qingjiang River in central China's Hubei Province, 163.com reported.

She expected to complete the swim in 17 hours. If successful, she would be the first Chinese woman to continuously swim that far.

Previous training sessions indicated Zhang is in perfect condition, BSU professor Zhang Jian said.

She swam 100 meters in an average 100 seconds, he said.

On Saturday, 27 groups of swimmers from across the nation will start a 20km swimming relay competition in the Qingjiang River.

Each group will have two swimmers who will change over every 46 seconds.
