Beijing-Lhasa luxury train for the well-heeled

A luxury train journey that costs over US$10,000 per person from Beijing to Lhasa, capital of the southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region is expected to run this year, a Tibet tourism official said.
Each train can take only 108 passengers on the seven-day journey and each cabin has its own bathroom and lounge. Tickets have to be booked in advance, Liao Lisheng, an official with the Tibet Tourism Bureau, was quoted by People's Daily today.
More tourists have chosen to drive to Tibet via highways while airlines have increased flights to Lhasa to meet big demand in the peak season, Liao said.
China invested 350 million yuan (US$53 million) in Tibet's tourism infrastructure during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010). Thirty projects, such as setting up tourist service centers in Lhasa and Shannan, have been completed or are still under construction.
Another 1 billion yuan will be spent on tourism infrastructure during the 12th Five-Year Plan period锛2011-2015锛, Liao added.
