Beijing’s Palace Museum to offer free visits to special groups of tourists

Bus drivers, conductors and sanitation worker will be able to visit the Palace Museum in Beijing for free in the museum's low-traffic months from this November to next March, Beijing Daily reported Monday.

In the last low season, the museum only waive the entry fee for Chinese teachers, college students, soldiers, police, medical staff and volunteers, it reported.

From November 1 to March 31, 2016, an adult ticket is lowered 20 yuan to 40 yuan.

This year, the museum will open free to volunteers, doctors and nurses on November 4, and servicemen and police officials on December 2.

The next year, the museum make January 6 as the free-visit day for bus drivers and conductors, February 3 for teachers and students, and March 2 for sanitation workers.

They can make reservation on gugong.228.com.cn in 10 days advance. At their free-visit day, they have carry their ID cards or documents showing their identities.

Previously, the museum made the first Wednesday of each month from December 2014 to April 2015 a free-visit day.

The measure was initiated to foster interest from these key groups of society and reward them for their dedication to the society, while at the same time reducing the hordes of tourists during high season, according to a previous statement of the museum.

Official figures showed the museum received more than 14 million visitors in 2012, becoming the first museum in the world to accept over 10 million people.
