Beijing’s highest smog alert this year
BEIJING issued its highest smog alert of the year yesterday, upgrading it from the yellow of the previous two days to orange, second only to red.
The city’s environment watchdogs have reinforced checks of discharges from coal-fired plants, outdoor barbecues and burning.
Meanwhile, smog persisted throughout the rest of north China for a second day yesterday with the yellow alert renewed.
In addition to the capital, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi and Shaanxi will all continue to experience smog to this morning at least, according to the National Meteorological Center.
South Beijing, central and south Hebei Province and north Henan Province will be especially affected, it said.
The public have been warned to take protective measures if going outdoors and those who suffer from respiratory diseases are advised to stay home.
