Below-par hospital oxygen pinpointed

THE Party boss of a central province's children's hospital has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and seven other officials reprimanded for using industrial oxygen to treat children for more than 10 years.

Li Xilian, Party secretary of Chenzhou Children's Hospital in Hunan, has also had her salary cut, Xinhua reported yesterday.

She used her influence to make the hospital buy oxygen from Chenzhou Industrial Gas Co Ltd, owned by her husband, Chen Heping.

Chen is under police investigation as his company was not qualified to produce medical oxygen, which must be at least 99.5 percent pure, with foreign substances such as carbon dioxide extracted, according to an earlier report.

Police found Chen sold more than 30,000 bottles of the below-standard oxygen to the hospital, causing a wave of serious child illnesses.
