Betrothal gifts split many lovers

A map for buying betrothal gifts went viral on the Weibo microblogging site yesterday. Many would-be bridegrooms said they felt pressure from high-priced gifts listed in the map.
The map put Shanghai and Tianjin in the 1-million-yuan bracket, indicating that Shanghai men should offer betrothal gifts valued over 100,000 yuan plus an apartment, while their peers in Tianjin should fork out 60,000 yuan plus an apartment.
The provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Jiangxi and Qinghai were put in the 500,000-yuan bracket. Shandong, Hunan and Zhejiang provinces were put in the 100,000-yuan bracket.
Chongqing was the only city that stayed in the zero-yuan bracket as local young men are not required to provide any betrothal gift to the girl's family.
It took a man surnamed Hu about one month to poll more than 300 people across the country by phone or e-mail to create the map.
"There are many dating couples I know who broke up because of the betrothal issues," said Hu. "My purpose of making this map is to convince others that love is more precious and cannot be measured by money."
Zhang Mingsuo, a sociologist at Zhengzhou University, said that marriage cannot be founded on betrothal presents. Instead, it is based on true love.
