Better by bus as government cars sold

Almost 4,000 cars previously used by central government officials have been sold, the National Development and Reform Commission said yesterday.

As part of China’s frugality campaign, government vehicles can only be used for select purposes including intelligence communication and emergencies, not regular government affairs.

Lian Weiliang, the NDRC’s deputy director, said 3,868 cars from 140 central government agencies had been sold at public auction with the money going to the treasury. No details of how much was raised were given.

Lian said that 2,000 drivers and service staff affected had been given other jobs.

The frugality program will next apply to local governments, Lian told a news conference.
