Bid to poison grandmother resulted in death of boy, 5

A STUDENT in Beijing has been arrested over an attempt to poison his step-grandmother and the death of a 5-year-old boy who drank a poisoned drink retrieved from a garbage can.

Vocational school student Wu Xiaojun has been charged with murder and negligently disposing of dangerous substances.

The 19-year-old and his disabled parents lived in a small room in an apartment owned by his grandfather.

However, his step-grandmother tried to remove her husband’s family, Wu told prosecutors.

To ensure his family didn’t lose their home, Wu decided to kill his step-grandmother, it was reported.

He is alleged to have injected toxic sodium nitrite into cans of almond milk, the elderly woman’s favorite drink.

Wu is said to have told a shop assistant that he had spilled sodium nitrite at his school lab and had to replace it.

However, while the senior drank the beverage she only suffered diarrhea and vomiting and thought she was coming down with a cold bug.

Wu is said to have then abandoned his attempt to kill his step-grandmother, pouring away some tainted almond milk and asking his mother to dump the rest in litter bins.

But a person scavenging in bins found the beverages and sent them to a couple who ran a garbage recycling station.

Their child drank a can and died despite emergency treatment, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.

It didn’t say when this occurred, nor when Wu was held.

Wu told prosecutors that the first time he felt he was going to lose his home was in 2008, when housing prices where he lived soared to 15,000 yuan (US$2,400) per square meter.

“One day, my grandmother told my father: ‘Go out and find a house for yourself,’” Wu said.

That was the first time he’d seen his father cry, Wu added.

After, Wu began to consider how his grandparents treated his family. They have a 60-square-meter apartment but gave Wu and his parents just 8 square meters to live in.

“My grandparents rarely showed me any affection,” Wu told prosecutors.
