Biden tells China cooperation key for global economy
GLOBAL economic health rests on the United States and China finding common ground, US Vice President Joe Biden told Vice President Xi Jinping, in talks aimed at shoring up faith in the dollar.
"I would suggest that there is no more important relationship that we need to establish on the part of the United States than a close relationship with China," Biden told Xi at the start of talks today in the Great Hall of the People.
"I am absolutely confident that the economic stability of the world rests in no small part on cooperation between the United States and China."
Biden's visit is about building trust, not striking deals, and both sides cast a warm glow on relations at the start of their talks, which reporters were allowed briefly to observe.
"I too believe that under the new conditions, China and the United States have ever more extensive common interests and we shoulder ever more important responsibilities," Xi told Biden.
Xi characterized Biden's six-day visit to China as a big event in this year's China-US relations, saying the visit will boost bilateral cooperative partnership.
Biden also recalled his two previous visits to China back to 1979 and 2001, highlighted his meeting with late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. He was among the first US senators to travel to Beijing after China and the United States forged diplomatic ties in January 1979.
