Biden wants to get China relations right
US Vice President Joe Biden said yesterday it was necessary to get his country’s relationship with China right and to improve cooperation among Washington’s Asian allies.
In a speech at South Korea’s Yonsei University after meeting South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Biden said the United States was devoted to promoting cooperation rather than competition with China.
Asian allies, especially Japan and South Korea, along with the US should be able to improve relationships and cooperation and try to get the relationship with China right in order to deal with emerging challenges such as maritime security and nuclear proliferation in the region, Biden said.
“We are committed to sustaining a positive, cooperative US-Chinese relationship,” Biden said. “It is not only in our interest, it is in the interests of the region and the world.”
He and Park had agreed to promote close cooperation between Seoul, Tokyo and Washington, he said, although ties between South Korea and Japan had been strained over disputed islands and wartime sex slaves.
He also urged all countries involved in disputes in the East and South China Seas to reduce the risk of conflict and avoid the possibility of miscalculations.
Biden reiterated that the US would not accept or tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea.
He said the US was prepared to go back to the six-party talks when North Korea demonstrated its full commitment to complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.
