Big Inner Mongolia graft case moved
THE corruption case of a former senior official of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been transferred to Beijing prosecutors for criminal investigation.
Liu Zhuozhi, former vice chairman of Inner Mongolia, was under probe for serious disciplinary violations last December, the Beijing News reported yesterday.
Liu allegedly used his position to seek interests for others and take bribes in return, the Central Commission for the Discipline Inspection of Communist Part of China said in a statement earlier.
Liu was expelled from the Party and sacked from public office for the serious violations in January.
Some environmental activists claimed Liu abused his power on coal and gas-extraction projects while he was the head of the Xilin Gol Prefecture from 2001 to 2008. Several of Liu's underlings have been sentenced for taking bribes, the 21st Century Business Herald reported earlier.
Liu was said to help a paper mill occupy land and pollute the grassland, sparking outrage among local herdsmen in 2000 and 2002. He was also alleged to acquire land plots at low prices while he supported a coal mine project in 2005. He later sold the land at much higher prices to make profits, the newspaper said earlier.
Song Wei, Liu's wife and former vice Party secretary of the prefecture's Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs, was put into double designation last November. Double designation is a special investigation process for Party officials. They have to explain their wrongdoings in a designated place within a designated time period.
Wei Xiaoping, the former vice Party secretary of Xilin Gol Prefecture, was sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting 9 million yuan (US$1.41 million) in bribes. Wei failed to explain the source of over 6 million yuan.
