Big rise in sea levels predicted

A NATIONAL scientific report has estimated that sea levels in China will rise to an average of 130 millimeters in the coming two decades, due to global warming.

The Second National Assessment Report on Climate Change - a joint work by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Meteorological Administration and the Chinese Academy of Sciences - predicted that rising temperatures would lead to the rise of sea levels by 80mm from 2009 levels to 130mm by 2030.

The report, released on Tuesday, also said the average temperature of the land surface in China increased 1.38 degrees centigrade between 1951 and 2009.

China's glaciers have shrunk by 10 percent over the past 60 years, as a result of rising temperatures, the report said.

The report also predicted that sea levels around Shanghai are expected to climb from 98 to 148mm by 2030.

Rising sea levels around China will submerge 18,000 square kilometers of coastal lowlands, according to the report.
