Bigger homes for PLA

SOLDIERS and officers of the People's Liberation Army will be entitled to more housing space as of January 1, according to an amended army regulation posted of the Ministry of Defense's Website.

Low-ranked officers and battalion commanders are entitled apartment space between 54 and 72 square meters respectively while the threshold for generals is 210 square meters.

The new rule stipulates that regiment leaders can get housing space between 72 and 92 square meters while division commanders are allowed space that is capped at 120 square meters.

It also regulates that the living space for corps commanders is between 150 and 190 square meters.

Senior sergeants serving in the PLA for more than 22 years are at the same standard as regiment commanders, according to the new rule.

The old rule has been in place since 1978. Since then, the average housing space for Chinese citizens has increased from 6.7 square meters per person to last year's 28 square meters, said Gu Junshan, director of the infrastructure and barracks division of the PLA General Logistics Department.

The new rule divides barracks into nine types.
