Big-name condom maker sued for online plagiary
A Chinese Weibo microblogger said she was suing Durex, the world-famous condom producer, for plagiary and demanding Durex to pay her one yuan and 100 boxes of condoms made by Jissbon, another well-known condom producer.
Durex published on its official Weibo site a short article yesterday, saying "the one who gets up to cook your breakfast is dearer than the one who cooks noodle for your dinner and goes to bed."
Soon, a microblogger named "Labixiaoqiu" claimed she was the author of this article and Durex didn't give her any credit. She said she was looking for lawyers who would be rewarded 100 boxes of Jissbon condoms.
Two lawyers immediately responded to her request for free legal services and many netizens, including some celebrities, also backed her lawsuit against Durex.
Durex published a statement on its Weibo site yesterday, admitting the plagiary and apologized to "Labixiaoqiu." It said one of its employees made the mistake and it was willing to compensate the author with Durex products. However, its gesture was rejected by "Labixiaoqiu."
"Labixiaoqiu" said a lawyer's letter would be mailed to Durex on Thursday. Her lawyer, Guo Xu, told the media that an indictment had already been prepared.
Guo said he and his client wanted to take advantage of this lawsuit to warn other big corporations and institutions against unscrupulous copyright infringement.
