Biker in accident claim kills himself

A MOTORCYCLIST committed suicide after claiming he had been wrongly accused of injuring an elderly man in a road accident.

The family of the 46-year-old, surnamed Wu, claim he was hounded for compensation.

A senior, surnamed Zhou, suffered leg fractures in an incident in Dongyuan County in southern Guangdong Province on December 31, the local TVS channel reported.

Zhou claimed Wu struck him while riding his motorbike.

But Wu told his family shortly before his death that he had only stopped to help Zhou.

“He felt there was an injustice but that he had nowhere to turn,” Wu’s wife, surnamed Lan, said.

Wu’s daughter said Zhou’s family had also demanded compensation.

Lan said members of Zhou’s family called on January 2 seeking hundreds of thousands of yuan — a huge sum the family could not afford.

She said the whole episode left her husband depressed and she recalls him saying, “You did me wrong. Was it wrong to be a Good Samaritan?”

Shortly afterwards, Wu took his own life.

An initial police investigation ruled out a collision. Police said Zhou might have fallen over after being startled by the passing motorcycle. Another police investigation is under way.

A villager, also surnamed Zhou, was sitting in front of his house at the time.

He saw the senior lying on the ground with Wu some distance away.

“I rushed over to the elderly man, but couldn’t lift him by myself so asked Wu to help me.

“Since I had to go to work, I asked Wu to send him to hospital,” he said.

The villager said he felt guilty about Wu’s death.

“It was me who asked him to come over to help,” he said. “I was shocked that he died.”

“I knew Wu. He was a very honest man,” he added.

But the injured Zhou’s son said his father was insistent that Wu caused the accident.

He also denied that the family had asked for compensation, TV news reported.
