Bill Gates honored as member of CAE
BILL Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering yesterday.
He is the founder and chairman of TerraPower, a leading nuclear innovation company. He was among the 18 new foreign academicians elected to the institution, alongside Dame Ann Dowling, president of the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, and Leo Rafael Reif, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The CAE now has 66 foreign academicians.
Of 533 candidates, 67 Chinese scientists were elected to the academy Ñ 49 from universities and research institutes, and 18 from businesses and hospitals.
ÒBecoming an academician is an honor, but also a responsibility,Ó said Wu Guanghui, chief designer of ChinaÕs large passenger jet C919. The C919 took to the skies in May this year, a major step for China in the global aviation market.
Other newly elected academicians include telecommunication satellite scientist Zhou Zhicheng, and Qiao Jie, a doctor who has been working in reproductive medicine for 30 years.
Of the 67 Chinese scientists, 63 are men. The average age is 56, with the eldest being 67 and the youngest 49. The CAE has 882 academicians.
Membership in the CAE is ChinaÕs highest title in the field of engineering and a lifelong honor. New members are recruited every two years.
The CAE and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are among ChinaÕs top think tanks.
