Billionaires' matchmaking event draws controversy
MORE than 300 women took part in a matchmaking competition in Guangzhou yesterday, which was allegedly held by 11 billionaires to select future wives.
The 320 candidates were winners from previous rounds that involved a total of 2,800 women aged from 19 to 56, the local Yangcheng Evening News reported today.
The majority were eliminated because they didn't meet certain requirements such as they had to be 18 to 28 years old, taller than 160cm, good looking and, as some "billionaires" required, that they have to be a virgin.
The event organizers told the paper that the match will later be held in Shenzhen and other eight Chinese cities where only 28 women will be qualified to compete in the final round and be selected by the 11 rich men as their wives.
The competition has stirred loud controversy on the Internet as many people doubted whether it was merely another public stunt to boost the reputation of a matchmaking company behind the "billionaires" who never showed up.
In yesterday's competition, the 320 women had to go through five rounds of interviews where they were judged for appearance, education and personality. But many women told the newspaper that they didn't even have a chance to see the billionaires who might be their future husbands.
