Billions recovered for cheated Chinese consumers
CHINESE authorities recovered 4.82 billion yuan (US$768 million) for deceived consumers over the past five years, it was revealed yesterday.
Industry and commerce administrators processed 24.68 million consumer requests or complaints in that time, officials told a conference in Beijing to mark Consumer Rights Day.
But they said consumers were increasingly becoming the target of new types of online swindles, as an expanding pool of Internet users had created a fertile environment for fraud.
By the end of 2012, the number of online shoppers had reached 242 million.
