Bird flies into jet engine, plane returns safely

A China Eastern jet hit a bird shortly after taking off and one of its two engines was slightly damaged. The plane circled over the Wuhan airport in the capital of Hubei Province for about an hour before landing safely, the Beijing Times reported today.

The China Eastern Flight MU2451 was bound for Beijing. The bird was sucked into the jet engine and slightly damaged a blade in the left engine at about 9:15am yesterday, the report said.

An airline official said that when the hit was detected, the flight crew decided to return to the airport. The planed circled around the airport for about an hour waiting to land and touched down safely at 10:19am. The engine was fixed before 5pm yesterday.

A Weibo blogger named Garrick was on the plane and wrote in microblog that the crew didn't tell passengers about the emergency until five minutes before landing to prevent passengers from getting nervous. "They handled it properly and the landing was very smooth," Garrick said.

All the passengers were transferred to another flight at 11:30am and reached Beijing at 2pm, the report said.
