Birth defect rate down after rising for years
CHINA’S birth defect rate has dropped in the past two years after more than a decade of fast growth, an official with the National Health and Family Planning Commission said yesterday.
The national prevalence of perinatal birth defects fell to 145.64 and 145.06 per 10,000 in 2012 and 2013 respectively, compared with 153.23 in 2011.
This means that there are 16,000 fewer children with birth defects since 2012, said Zhang Shikun, the commission’s maternal and child health service bureau director.
The prevalence of perinatal birth defects in China shot up from 87.67 per 10,000 in 1996 to 153.23 in 2011.
Zhang attributed the recent drop to government preventive measures. Programs since 2009 include free pre-pregnancy health check-ups and newborn disease screening in poverty-stricken areas.
Zhang cautioned that there is still a long way to go.
