Blast rumor causes exodus, 4 people killed in panic run
AT least four people were killed early yesterday in panic evacuation as thousands of residents in Xiangshui County, Jiangsu Province, fled home on rumors that a local chemical plant was about to explode.
Xiangshui government said in a report yesterday afternoon that there was no evidence of an explosion and police was tracing the source of the rumor, Jinling Evening News reported.
The report said the four victims were killed in a traffic accident when a three-wheeler carrying 20 people overturned and fell into a river.
The rumor swept the town at about 2am yesterday, claiming there was poisonous gas leak from the local Chenjiagang Industrial Zone and an explosion might happen any minute. Some locals told the newspaper they really smelled some odor at that time.
One resident surnamed Wan said people began to flee the town in droves. The street was suddenly filled with people and vehicles.
"I was wondering what had happened to them when my relative called and told me a chemical plant in the industrial zone was about to explode," Wan said. "I didn't believe it, but since all my relatives had left, I followed as well."
After daybreak, the odorous smell disappeared. Most residents began to return home.
Local government said on its website that security and environment authorities were investigating the source of the smell, and no sign of serious problems had been found so far.
