Blizzards forecast as bitter cold spreads
THE National Meteorological Center yesterday warned central and southeast China of blizzard conditions as a bitter cold front kept expanding southward, enveloping the country in snow and record-low temperatures.
Snow now covers most of southern China. Even Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will see temperature drops up to 10 degrees Celsius, the center said.
Snow, which began to fall at 8:45am yesterday, coated Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, in white. Forecasts say snowstorms will continue to ravage most of Jiangxi until tomorrow.
With the average temperature having dropped from about 9 to 1.7 degrees, most parts of central China's Hunan Province are being pounded by rain, snow and hail.
Flights leaving an airport in Jiangxi were canceled as snow affected visibility.
In Hunan, drivers had to slow to avoid accidents and construction was halted as the bitter cold made working outside impossible.
In an extreme case, temperatures in Hulunbuir City in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have hovered at around minus 45 degrees for the past three days.
Temperatures in most parts of China will climb tomorrow, weathermen said.
