Blogger charged with tax evasion

THE lawyer of a man charged with tax evasion in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region said his client was in court because the local government had objected to criticism in his blog.

Ma Zhongqi, owner of a gas station in Haiyuan County, was accused of evading more than 220,000 yuan (US$33,460), but lawyer Zhou Ze said the offense was not a crime under the law and the money had been paid back, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.

Prosecutors said that Ma had twice been charged with evading tax within five years, which made it a criminal matter. They said that Ma had been charged in 2004 and 2009, but Zhou said the punishment in 2004 should not count because it was more than five years ago.

Zhou and his client both believed that the real reason for Ma being taken to court was his blog, in which Ma criticized the local government over its construction of Haiyuan New District.

Ma published several articles on the construction, especially criticizing the relocation of local government, saying it was too luxurious for such a poor county.

The court process has not yet ended.
