Bloody attack at divorce court
A BLOODY attack at a divorce hearing in Yunnan Province has left one woman dead and another seriously injured.
The couple seeking the divorce, Deng Jiaxi, and his wife Yang Changmei, went to Baiyi Court of Songming County People's Court in Kunming with relatives to have their divorce case heard.
But when Deng and Yang met in a courtyard before the courtroom, they quarreled angrily, the Kunming-based Spring City Evening Post reported today.
Deng grabbed a scythe from his car and ran at Yang attacking her. He slashed her on the chest even as Yang's sister-in-law, Zhang Liping, tried to stop him. Deng then slashed the sister-in-law about the back and waist.
Zhang tried to grab hold of the scythe but her finger was cut off and she collapsed in a pool of blood. She was rushed to hospital but died there.
In the meantime Li Wenhua, Yang's husband, was calling for help but no policemen or judges appeared.
Deng saw what he had done, threw the scythe down, strode from the courtyard and fled, Li said. All the court staff were hiding inside.
Li has asked for compensation of 3 million yuan (US$438,596) from the court. The court has made no comment and police are still investigating.
Yang is in a critical situation in hospital.
