Blown tires, high-altitude bird strike disable planes
RARE incidents damaged two commercial aircraft on Tuesday, causing delays but no injuries.
Two tires burst on a Shanghai Airlines flight from Shanghai to northwestern Gansu Province when the Boeing 737 made an intermediate stop at an airport in Shaanxi Province, the airline said yesterday.
The unusual occurrence caused a delay of almost six hours. The accident was caused by an unspecified "technical malfunction" after Flight FM9205 to Jiayuguan landed at Xianyang Airport in Xi'an at around 11:19am, airline officials said.
The reason the tires blew was still being investigated, an official with the carrier said. The airline dispatched another aircraft and sent passengers to a hotel. The replacement aircraft departed with the passengers at around 5:30pm.
"The bursts happened when the aircraft was still taxing shortly after landing," a passenger surnamed Jiang said.
With the first tire, passengers felt only a bump. Jiang said there was a severe jolt when the second one blew five minutes later, and the plane stopped on the taxiway. A photo shows two tires on the left undercarriage deflated.
Tires could blow because of debris on a runway or pilots failing to brake properly, experts said.
Also on Tuesday, the nose cone of an Air China Boeing 757 was severely damaged in a flight from Chengdu to Guangzhou after the aircraft struck a bird at 8,000 meters, officials said.
Flight CA4307 returned to Chengdu after the incident, which occurred about 20 minutes after the aircraft had taken off at 10:20am.
