Bo Xilai stands trial on Thursday

The trial of disgraced senior Chinese official Bo Xilai will start on Thursday, when he will face charges of bribery, corruption and abuse of power.

The open trial of Bo, 64, will begin at the Intermediate People’s Court in Jinan, capital of the eastern province of Shandong at 8:30am, the court said yesterday.

A spokeswoman would not say how long the trial of the former Communit Party chief of the southwestern city of Chongqing, would last, though it could be just a day.

Bo, who was the commerce minister before became Chongqing’s Party boss, was indicted on the charges last month.

Jinan City People’s Procuratorate accused Bo of using the advantage of his position to seek benefits for others after receiving a huge amount of kickbacks.

Bo is also accused of accepting bribes amounting to more than 20 million yuan (US$3.3 million) and embezzling 5 million yuan while he was in a previous post in the eastern city of Dalian.

He is also found to have maintained improper sexual relationships with a number of women.

Bo’s downfall began when Wang Lijun, former Chongqing police chief and vice mayor, fled to the US Consulate in neighboring Chengdu City in February 2012, where he revealed that Bo’s wife, Bogu Kailai, had murdered British businessman Neil Heywood in November 2011, a death previously listed as accidental and that Bo had sought to block the police investigation.

Bo was detained a month later.

Bo’s wife was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on August 20,  2012.

Wang was jailed for 15-years for initially covering up the murder and other crimes.
