Bo charged with graft, power abuse

Bo Xilai, former Party chief of China's southwest city of Chongqing, has been charged with taking bribes, embezzlement and abuse of power, according to an indictment delivered to the Intermediate People's Court of Jinan in east China's Shandong Province yesterday.
Bo took advantage of his position as a civil servant to seek gains for others, as well as accepting bribes in the form of large amounts of money and property, according to the indictment.
Bo, 64, formerly served as mayor of Dalian City, governor of Liaoning Province and minister of commerce, before he became Party chief of Chongqing in 2007.
In April last year, the Party's Central Committee said it had decided to suspend Bo's membership of the Political Bureau and the Central Committee, as he was suspected of being involved in serious discipline violations.
In September, Bo was expelled from the Party and his public office. The Party's Political Bureau also decided to transfer Bo's alleged violations and relevant evidence to judicial bodies.
Bo has been accused of receiving more than 20 million yuan (US$3.26 million) in bribes and embezzling another 5 million yuan.
The sum is around a third of the amount the government accused former Railways Minister Liu Zhijun of accepting in bribes. Liu was given a suspended death sentence earlier this month.
Bo's wife Bogu Kailai and Chongqing's former police chief Wang Lijun have both been convicted and jailed over a scandal which stems from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.
Prosecutors in Jinan indicted Bo, meaning the trial will take place there. It did not say when the trial would start.
Under Chinese law, charges must be served at least 10 days before a trial begins.
