Boars become new pest to Zhejiang farmers

MORE than 150,000 hungry boars ravaged crops and hurt people in many parts of Zhejiang Province but victimized villagers were not allowed to shoot them, Hangzhou-based Qianjiang Evening News reported today.

It is not uncommon for villagers in Zhejiang to see hundreds of boars roaming down hillsides in broad day light to eat their crops. But the number of forages by hogs has increased sharply this year, the paper said.

A village official in Chun'an County said the boars had destroyed over 7,500 kilograms of maize in July and August alone, which was about one third of his village's total yield for this year.

Wang Chenghai, a local farmer, said he failed to harvest anything in recent two years. The hogs destroyed everything he grew. He simply gave up his hillside farm this year.

Some people formed a squad to keep off the bristly invaders. But their only weapons are sticks. Authorities took away their guns in April and won't give them back until the World Expo ends.
