Boat captain guilty of 39 deaths
A HONG Kong boat captain was yesterday found guilty of the manslaughter of 39 people in a 2012 ferry collision.
Lai Sai-ming, the skipper of “Sea Smooth,” was also convicted of one count of endangering the safety of others at sea when his high-speed ferry hit a pleasure boat near Lamma Island.
Lai, 56, looked solemn as he awaited the verdict in Hong Kong’s high court.
“Mr Lai will be sentenced on Monday,” his lawyer said outside court.
Chow Chi-wai, 58, who was steering the “Lamma IV” pleasure boat when it crashed with more than 120 people on board on October 1, 2012, was acquitted of all 39 charges of manslaughter.
He was, however, found guilty of one count of endangering the safety of others at sea.
The vessel was filled with workers from a local company and their families when the collision occurred.
Scores of people were thrown into the sea when the boat was torn open by the impact. Others were trapped inside as the “Lamma IV” sank in just two minutes.
