'Body' of beaten vendor comes to life
A GROUP of street vendors displayed the “body” of a man who they said was beaten to death by urban management officials for selling socks in downtown Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province.
The problem with the account is that after “dead man” lay on the ground for hours in the public square, he couldn’t take the heat anymore and got up from where he lay, Wuhan Evening News reported.
Local urban management authority said the group of some 20 vendors often occupied a road selling goods and resisted law enforcement attempts to move them. They plotted to discredit officials by saying the man had been beaten to death after refusing to move, the authority said.
Four of the vendors are in custody, including the ringleader, police said.
But the “body” is still on the loose.
Lawyer Qiu Hua said police reports indicated that the vendors violated rules and stirred up trouble, and so they may face administrative detention.
Urban management officials in China’s south-central Hunan Province were accused of beating a watermelon-seller to death when he refused to move last month.
