Body of missing boy, 14, found at Zhejiang mountain resort after 4 months

POLICE have found the body of a missing 14-year-old boy at a mountain resort in Zhejiang Province after a four months’ search, Xinhua news agency reported.
His skull and legs were discovered separately from the rest of his body in a canyon at a mountain resort in Cangnan County, Wenzhou.
Local police confirmed the skull was from the boy identified as Xiao Wen by a DNA test on September 28. The body, with more than 10 logs and branches on top of it, was found along a narrow rock ledge at a pond.
The cause of the boy’s death remains a mystery while police continue to investigate.
Xiao Wen was reported missing on June 23 during a backpackers’ trip in the Juxi Grand Canyon with a small group, including his mother. Local authorities launched a massive search with over 2,000 people participating, but the boy remained lost after weeks of searching.
During the trip, the backpackers reached a reservoir. Part of the group, including his mother, could not swim and she and three other backpackers set off on a mountain trail. Xiao Wen chose to swim across the water wearing a life jacket, so the mother left him with a male friend surnamed Xu.
Xiao Wen and Xu lost their way during the trip and stayed a night at the bottom of the canyon. Xu said he left the boy the next morning in order to find cell phone signal, the report said.
The boy’s father did not give up searching for his son until local rescuers found the boy’s shoe, skull and the broken body with a life jacket on it.
The canyon trip was intended as a celebration of the boy’s graduation from elementary school. However, neither the mother nor the boy had any experience in outdoor adventure trips. They didn’t plan to stay overnight and took no supplies to survive for more than a day in the wilderness.
