Body snatchers steal 10 corpses in Sichuan village

TEN or more buried corpses have been stolen in past 13 years in Zhuxi village in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, according to a report that police are investigating.

Local villagers said most of the robbed bodies were women. They said they frequently saw highly decomposed body parts in the fields, the West China Metropolis Daily reported today.

Though relatives of the deceased recruited graveyard keepers, they failed to stop the robbery. The latest one occurred on October 27.

Local villager Chen Zuqing said his 47-year-old wife died of cancer and her body was laid to rest on September 27. Afraid her body would be stolen, he recruited two watchmen to keep close eye on the body 24 hours a day.

The two didn’t detect any problems within a month. But on the day after their contract with Chen ended, the body was stolen.

The village’s party chief, surnamed Tang, said they had caught a body snatcher in 2008. The man, who had a criminal history, was so superstitious that he believed the stolen body would ensure his son a place at a university. The man left the village and never came back, Tang said, adding that the robberies, however, didn’t end.

Villagers said the problem has been traumatic for them and they hoped police could solve the case as soon as possible, the newspaper reported.
