Bogu Kailai has death sentence commuted
Bogu Kailai, the wife of the fallen Politburo member Bo Xilai, and former railways minister Liu Zhijun have had their suspended death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, China Central Television reported yesterday.
The decision was made after the end of a two-year suspension period, during which neither committed any other offenses, the Beijing Higher People’s Court said.
Liu, 62, was sentenced in July 2013 for taking bribes worth 64.6 million yuan (US$10 million). Bogu, 57, was sentenced in August 2012 for the murder of British citizen Neil Heywood.
Qincheng Prison in Beijing’s suburbs said Liu realized his guilt and had behaved well in prison. He was even named as a model prisoner last year, according to a notice published by the court.
Bo Xilai is serving a life sentence in prison after being convicted in September 2013 of accepting bribes totaling more than 20.4 million yuan, embezzling 5 million yuan and abusing his power to influence the handling of his wife’s murder case.
