Bogus UN officials tried to free convict

TWO farmers from central China’s Hunan Province tried to secure the release of a prisoner by claiming to be United Nations officials, police said.

The pair turned up at the office of Yang Haibo, director of the high-security zone of Yueyang City Prison, on Saturday, demanding the release of a prisoner on medical grounds.

When Yang asked to see identification, the pair first claimed to be from “secret departments,” before producing documents stating they were UN officials.

The suspicious official alerted police who took them away. It was not reported whether the men were detained.

According to officers, one of the men, a 66-year-old surnamed Lin from local Huayuan County, said the prisoner was his cousin.

As the jailed man’s elderly parents were in ill health and desperate to see their son, Lin decided to help.

Lin turned for help to a 58-year-old fellow villager surnamed Wu. Wu obtained fake official documents to have Lin’s cousin released for medical treatment, said police.

But Yang saw through their scheme, local Sanxiang City Express reported yesterday.

At first, the pair put on quite a show, it was reported. Wu produced documents which he claimed were to obtain the prisoner’s release.

“We’re here to grant the prisoner release for medical treatment. Here is the personal reply from China’s top leader. Please hand him over immediately,” Wu reportedly said.

When Yang asked for identification certificates, Wu is reported to have angrily claimed they were staff from “secret departments.”

However, he is said to have reluctantly produced two certificates, one a “Special Permit for the Headquarters of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force,” and the other a “Work Permit for the Global Peacekeeping United Office.”

Wu was still reportedly insisting he was an official when armed police arrived.

He showed photos which he said were of him and state leaders, and claimed he was calling a central government leader.
