Bogus bus gang busted
FOUR people have been arrested in Shenzhen City in south China's Guangdong Province for driving a bogus bus and extorting around 30,000 yuan (US$4,749) from hundreds of people over the last two months.
The accused bought a scrap vehicle in the province's Dongguan City and modified it into a No. 868 public transport bus, spraying its body with yellow paint.
The suspects from Hubei Province even stole a real bus plate from a parking lot to make the bus look like a real one, Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.
The gang drove the fake bus after midnight in the city's suburbs to avoid being discovered by police. They plundered between 50 yuan to 90 yuan from every passenger, the report cited police as saying.
They resorted to violence and kicked off passengers who refused to pay up, according to a victim who reported her miserable experience to police in Pinghu Town on February 13. Several other passengers later confirmed it.
Police narrowed down their search for the illegal bus and busted the gang on Sunday as they tried to rob innocent passengers, the report said.
The report pointed out the irony in the fact that the robbers spent around 50,000 yuan on the counterfeit bus but just made 30,000 yuan since Spring Festival.
