Bogus cop preys on brothel goers
A man who used a fake police badge to extort more than 35,000 yuan (US$5,600) from people having sex services was sentenced to seven months in prison today, the Minhang District People's Court said.
The 28-year-old convict surnamed Ren bought a fake police badge from a street vendor and pretended to be a cop making a routine check on prostitutes and their clients.
Last April Ren and his partners waited outside a hair salon in Pujiang Town and "caught" a man surnamed Huang. Ren said they were plainclothes policemen and asked Huang to go with them for further investigation, prosecutors said.
Huang, an old patron of the salon, was "fined" 26,000 yuan and was obliged to give away his bank card and password, the court heard. It was when he went to the police station for questioning the next day that he realized he had been deceived.
Prosecutors said Ren used the bank card to buy a 9,230-yuan ring and shared other money with his partners.
They were caught by police last October when they tried to make the same trick.
Since Ren returned all the ill-gotten money and pleaded guilty, the court gave him a light sentence. His partners were arraigned separately, the court said.
