Bogus drug ring busted, 23 held

POLICE in central China have arrested a group of 23 people who allegedly used sawdust and flavor to make bogus drug capsules worth of nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.52 million), Chutian Golden Newspaper reported yesterday.

The suspects bought equipment to manufacture bogus or adulterated drugs in Hubei and Shaanxi provinces last May. The capsules that contained low-level of medical ingredients were relabeled and made to look like real tablets produced by 130 drug companies,.

With fake production licenses and invoices, the drugs made their way to nearly 20 drug stores via a distribution network that stretched over 20 provinces, Jingzhou City police said.

The case was exposed after the drug watchdog got a complaint from a man surnamed Li whose wife bought drugs worth of 4,380 yuan last June. Li found the drugs had no batch number or production date and requested verification. The Food and Drug Administration of Jingzhou soon confirmed the drugs were fake and passed on Li's complaint to local police.
