Bogus drug rings smashed by Heilongjiang police

TWO counterfeit drug rings were busted in Harbin, the capital of northeastern Heilongjiang Province. Police arrested nine people and seized more than 800 boxes of fake drugs valued over 1.6 million yuan (US$253,440), Xinhua reported today.

Investigations showed the two rings sold 121 types of bogus drugs, mostly prescribed medicines, to thousands of licensed pharmacies in north China, earning about 13 million yuan.

The offenders purchased bogus medicines in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Henan and Shaanxi provinces and sold them to Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin and Inner Mongolia, Xinhua said.

They bought telephone numbers of licensed pharmacies from logistics companies at a price of less than 1 yuan per number and pretended to be legitimate drug sellers to dupe those pharmacies into buying their fake drugs at low prices.

The fake drugs were retailed at market prices and had little side effect, making it difficult for customers, mostly in rural areas, to find out anything wrong, authorities said.
