Bogus medicine operation smashed

TWO fake drugs rings alleged to have supplied 3,000 pharmacies in northern China with goods worth 13 million yuan (US$2.06 million) have been busted by police.

Nine suspects were arrested and more than 800 boxes of 121 types of bogus drugs, worth 1.6 million yuan, were confiscated by police in Harbin, capital of northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province.

The suspects are said to have purchased fake medication in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Henan and Shaanxi provinces and sold it in Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin and Inner Mongolia, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

They bought the telephone numbers of licensed pharmacies from logistics companies for less than 1 yuan per number and pretended to be legitimate drug sellers to dupe pharmacies into buying their low-price fakes, it is claimed.

The gangs showed forged credentials to pharmacies to win their trust, police said.

Their fakes had no active ingredients, "neither curing people nor killing them," Qi Haibo, an alleged ringleader, is reported to have told police.
