Bohai Sea oil platforms continue to leak
OIL continued to spill from the two platforms in the Penglai 19-3 field in north China's Bohai Sea where two spill accidents occurred in June, authorities said.
The State Oceanic Administration said its surveillance ships detected oil slicks and bubbles around Platform B and a 24-hour leakage of 2.52 liters of oil from Platform C. Xinhua news agency quoted one official as saying the polluted area was expanding.
China has asked ConocoPhillips, a US oil company that operates the Penglai field, to halt production at the platforms on July 13 because of its "slow progress" in stopping the leakage.
The administration has given the company an August 31 deadline to completely plug the oil spills, Xinhua said.
Earlier reports said fishermen in the Bohai Bay believed the oil spills had caused the mass death of their farmed scallops this season.
