Bomb hoax halts flight at HK airport for 2 hours

A bomb threat delayed a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai for two hours yesterday at the Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok airport.

All China Eastern Airlines flight MU502 passengers were evacuated at 12:30pm when the plane was set to take off and police was told a bomb had been placed on the plane, China News Service reported today.

Police spent two hours to searching the plane, the passengers and their luggage and found nothing suspicious. Police said they believed it was a hoax.

The plane eventually took off at 2:45pm, the report said.

The Hong Kong government has given conditional approval to building a third runway at the airport, which will require massive land reclamation.

Transport Secretary Eva Cheng said government policy advisers approved an expansion plan for Chek Lap Kok airport that involves reclaiming 650 hectares of land from the sea. The project is expected to cost US$11 billion, including US$5 billion for land reclamation.
