Bomb hoax was a ploy to put off creditor

THE man who diverted a domestic flight to a third airport last Thursday with a bomb threat made the hoax just to delay meeting his creditor who was on that plane, police told Wuhan Evening News yesterday.

Xiong Yi, a 29-year-old resident of Shiyan City in Hubei Province, owed his creditor 240,000 yuan (US$37,825) and made the hoax after reading a similar drama online the day before.

The paper said Xiong ran a used car business in four cities including Shenzhen and his business is losing money, putting him 240,000 yuan in debt to his creditor also surnamed Xiong.

He made an anonymous call from Dongguan, Guangdong Province to Shenzhen airport on Thursday evening, claiming he had planted a bomb on Shenzhen Airlines Flight ZH9706 that was already on route for Shenzhen from Xiangyang, Hubei Province.

But Xiong's plan didn't hold off his creditor for long. Police said the creditor changed a plane and managed to find Xiong in Dongguan the next day.

Xiong was caught in a hotel on Saturday and was escorted back to Wuhan yesterday.
