Bomb hoaxer held in Taiwan
A woman who joked with check-in staff at a Taiwan airport that she was carrying a bomb in her luggage has been detained by local police.
The incident happened on Sunday when the woman, surnamed Xu, was checking in for a flight to Shanghai at Taoyuan International Airport.
At the China Eastern Airlines desk she asked to have a “fragile” sticker put on her bag. When her friend and traveling partner asked what she was carrying, Xu quipped that it was a bomb, local media reported.
The airline employee immediately called police, and despite Xu’s protestations that she was joking, officers failed to see the funny side and took her into custody.
Under Taiwan’s aviation regulations, the hoaxer could now face up to three years in prison and a fine of 1 million New Taiwan Dollars (US$33,000).
Last year, a person was sentenced to 10 months in prison in Taiwan and fined NT$50,000 for making a hoax bomb call, one of eight handled in the year by local airports and airlines, Taiwan media reported.
And on China’s mainland, hoaxers face up to 15 years in prison and possible civil action for damages from the affected airline.
